Laminectomy

Laminectomy is a surgery to remove the lamina. Lamina is the flattened or arched part of the vertebral arch, forming the roof of the spinal canal; the posterior part of the spinal ring that covers the spinal cord or nerves. This is part of the bone that makes up a vertebra in the spine. Laminectomy may also be done to remove bone spurs in your spine. The procedure can take pressure off your spinal nerves or spinal cord.A laminectomy is a type of back surgery used to relieve compression on the spinal cord. During the procedure, your doctor will remove the lamina. The lamina is part of the bone that forms the vertebral arch in the spine.

procedure

Laminectomy is performed under general anesthesia in this the patient is usually positioned lying on the side or stomach. And then a retractor is used to spread apart the muscles and the fatty tissues covering the spine. When the laminae have been reached, the bony arch is cut in order to get to the ligamentum flavum (which is a band of yellow tissue attached to the vertebra that helps to support the spinal column). Thereby an opening is made in the ligamentum flavum to reach the spinal canal and then to the compressed nerve. At this point the cause of compression will be visible (that may be a herniated disk, tumour, fragmented disk etc) which is then rectified. This Surgery is completed in one to three hours.

When is laminectomy recommended?

Sciatica

Spinal Stenosis: Narrowing of the spinal canal compressing the cord

Cauda Equina Syndrome: A rare disorder caused when a broken disk, bone fracture, or spinal stenosis put intense pressure on the spinal nerve roots at the lower end of the spinal cord.

Herniated disc: A herniated disk is a condition when the nucleus ruptures and is forced through the outer annulus into the spaces between the vertebrae. Thereby putting pressure on the nerve roots or compresses the spinal cord itself.

Osteoarthritis: Osteoarthritis is a disorder in which the cartilage in the hips, knees, and other joints gradually breaks down, allowing the surfaces of the bones to rub directly against each other.

What Happens After a Laminectomy?

When you wake up after surgery, your doctor will probably ask you to get up and walk around a bit (unless you had a spinal fusion). You’ll probably stay in the hospital for one to three days, but this procedure can sometimes be done on an outpatient basis.

While you’re recovering, you should:

  • avoid strenuous activity and heavy lifting
  • be careful when climbing stairs
  • gradually increase your activities, such as walking
  • schedule and go to all follow-up appointments
